Chicagoland residents can save hundreds of dollars using rebates offered from utility companies like Peoples Gas, North Shore Gas, NICOR and ComEd. Below is a summary of what kind of rebates and discounts you can expect in 2017.
Federal Income Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency
The tax credits listed below are available for purchases made in 2017. All other ENERGY STAR federal tax credits expired at the end of 2016. ENERGY STAR products eligible for tax credits are independently certified to save energy, save money and protect the environment. Use up to 30% less energy in your home by outfitting it with ENERGY STAR products available across more than 70 categories.
2017 Federal Tax Credits
30% of cost with no upper limit
Expires: December 31, 2021
Tax credits for Solar Energy Systems are available at 30% through December 31, 2019.
The credit decreases to 26% for tax year 2020; drops to 22% for tax year 2021 then expires December 31, 2021)
Details: Existing homes and new construction qualify. Both principal residences and second homes qualify. Rentals do not qualify.

In the market for a new thermostat? Consider getting a smart one! ComEd is offering a $125 rebate if you purchase and install a smart thermostat in your Chicago area home. Residents can get two thermostats per household. To qualify, youll need to have an active ComEd residential account and a central air conditioner, electric heat or a heat pump.
To begin, download this application and verify your eligibility. There are two smart thermostats that are eligible for this rebate, the Nest Learning Thermostat and Ecobbe3. Make sure you have a working wi-fi connection, your HVAC is compatible and that you are able to install it yourself. However, if you need us to install the thermostat for you, we can help you with that, but it'll be a different application, which you can find here.
Peoples Gas: The Peoples Gas Natural Gas Savings Program offers incentive programs to customers to encourage them to make energy-efficient improvements to their homes and apartment buildings in the Chicago-area. Additionally, Peoples Gas offers a loan program to finance a project; click here for details. Below are the specific options currently available:
North Shore Gas: The North Shore Gas Natural Gas Savings Program also offers incentive programs to customers to encourage them to make energy-efficient improvements to their homes and apartment buildings in the Northern suburban Chicago area. Additionally, North Shore Gas offers a loan program to finance a project; click here for details. Below are the specific options currently available:
NICOR Gas: Residential NICOR Gas customers may be eligible for cash rebates for their purchase and installation of high-efficiency gas furnaces, boilers, water heaters and energy-efficient home improvements. As with all of these rebates, they’re determined by the program requirements, system’s efficiency rating and when the system was purchased and installed; click here for a complete rundown of program requirements. Complete System Replacement Rebates
Through a partnership between Nicor Gas and Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), residential customers of both utility companies are eligible for cash rebates when installing both a qualifying furnace and central air conditioning system at the same time.
