Furnaces

Furnaces are rather simple, conceptually, but they are not all the same. Some use natural gas, others are fueled by propane. Some furnaces are more efficient than others, as indicated by their AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating. Expressed as a percentage, The AFUE rating simply illustrates how efficient a furnace is. Obviously, a higher efficiency furnace will keep a living space warm while using less energy.

There is a consistent theme in HVAC - that everyone's needs are different. What is best for you is not necessarily the same as your neighbor. In order to accommodate the diverse needs of homeowners, there are many different features available on furnaces. The ones to look for include heat exchangers that resist corrosion, direct-drive blower units, induced draft blowers, pressure switches, and an insulated blower compartment, which helps minimize operating noise.
